A Siva-Parvati masterpiece

-By Rohan

Few representations of Siva-Parvati can compare with the emotional expressiveness of this masterpiece.

Siva’s marriage to Parvati is an event celebrated in stories, literature, and art. In the south, it takes on an intimate local aspect, for Siva and Parvati are identified with Sundara, a youth, and Mïnàksï, a princess of Madurai.

Inspired by an original vision, the creative sculptor breathed new life into conventional iconography. There is life, joy, and innocence in his poignant rendering of the divine as human and the human as divine.

The painstaking preparation of the wax model and the skillful casting of the image are responsible for much of this liquid movement, the total effect being that of metal flowing in the mould rather than of the chisel carving out the forms – a worthy Indian treasure!
